About the Department

The Department of Chemical Engineering endeavours to foster the convergence of engineering and chemical sciences with biological sciences and advanced materials. The department is supported by highly qualified faculty members with expertise across core and allied areas of chemical engineering, including catalysis and reaction engineering, thermodynamics, transport processes, separation processes, biochemical and bioprocess engineering, microbial biotechnology, electrochemical engineering, fuel cells, synthesis and drug design, molecular modelling and simulation, computational fluid dynamics, renewable energy, clean and green technologies, desalination, industrial effluent treatment, advanced materials characterization, supercritical fluid extraction, natural flavour extraction, optimization and modelling, clean coal technology, food processing, enhanced oil recovery, and several emerging areas.

The department is committed to providing a strong academic foundation while fostering innovation, interdisciplinary learning, and research. Its objective is to bring together expertise from diverse domains and provide students and faculty with exposure to contemporary tools, technologies, and global developments in engineering and applied sciences. Faculty and researchers are encouraged to collaborate across biotechnology, biological and medical sciences, information technology, nanotechnology, engineering, mathematics, environmental sciences, and materials engineering to address complex national and international challenges. Within a relatively short span of time, the department has established a strong academic and research presence. Its graduates have demonstrated excellent performance in nationally and internationally competitive examinations such as GATE, GRE, TOEFL, and IELTS. Graduates have secured positions in reputed organizations through campus recruitment, while several have pursued higher studies and research at reputed institutions in India and abroad.

The department actively promotes academic and professional engagement through industry–institute interaction, conferences, short-term courses, GIAN initiatives, Skill India programmes, and other knowledge-sharing activities. Such initiatives provide valuable opportunities for students and faculty to interact with experts, gain exposure to emerging technologies, and strengthen their academic and professional capabilities.

Research and development constitute a significant component of the department's activities. Faculty members are actively engaged in externally sponsored research projects spanning diverse areas of chemical engineering and interdisciplinary sciences, with the cumulative value of sponsored projects exceeding ₹1 crore.
